A Welcome Experience by Carolyn Herbert
£12.99 (incl. p&p)
A PSHCE programme of work for Key Stages 1 and 2
A Welcome Experience seeks to increase teachers' confidence in addressing the needs and experiences of their refugee pupils in a mainstream setting whilst raising the profile of the 'refugee experience'.
The lessons address the QCA Unit 5 Living in a Diverse World and are intended for use with the whole class. The issues raised are relevant to all children.
Stories are used to introduce the issues, which include:
- The importance of family, friends and school
- Similarities and differences between people
- Welcoming newcomers
There are many opportunities for listening and speaking. Other activities involve role-play and supported writing.
The lessons are intended as a starting point only. It is hoped that teachers will develop their own ideas for follow-up and supplementary activities.
The topic lends itself to cross-curricular links with Geography, History, RE, drama and other creative activities.
The book contains lesson plans, photocopiable activity sheets, a book list and useful websites.
