Factors which Support Achievement
Schools which most successfully integrate refugee and asylum-seeking children have found the following elements to be most helpful:
- Positive welcoming procedures
- A clear role for support staff, trained to support the settling in procedure
- Peer support schemes, such as 'buddying'
- Immediate intervention for targeted pupils
- Clear targets for learning
In addition, to promote the on-going well-being and learning of the refugee child, the following are also helpful:
- Specific systems of monitoring
- Mentoring
- Access to extra study facilities, e.g. homework club - after school or break time
- Access to after school activities (is the cost an obstacle?)
- Support during break times
- Family learning (can refugee groups be targeted?)
